Removable Partial Dentures

Removable Partial Dentures can be removed and replaced at will by the patient. A Removable Partial Denture or RPD replaces some missing teeth, for health, function and esthetic purposes.

Removable Partial Dentures can be classified in many ways. It can be based on its support:
1. Tooth Supported Removable Partial Dentures.
2. Tooth and Tissue Supported Removable Partial Dentures.
3. Implant Supported Removable Partial Dentures.

Tooth Supported Removable Partial Dentures are indicated for space with teeth anterior and posterior to the space(tooth supported space).

Tooth and Tissue Supported Removable Partial Dentures are indicated for edentulous space with teeth either anterior or posterior to the space.

Implant Supported Removable Partial Denture, as the name implies, is a type of RPD which utilizes osseointegrated fixtures or implants for support.

Removable Partial Dentures can also be classified as:
1. Clasp-Retained Removable Partial Dentures.
2. Internal Attachment Removable Partial Dentures.

Clasp-Retained Removable Partial Dentures, utilize Clasps as its direct retainers.

Precision Attachment Removable Partial Denture utilizes precision attachments as its direct retainers.

Removable Partial Dentures can also be categorized as:
1. All Acrylic Removable Partial Dentures.
2. Cobalt Chromium Removable Partial Dentures.

All Acrylic Removable Partial Dentures are designed for temporary use. This type of RPD is easy to construct and modify. It is also the most affordable.

Cobalt Chromium Removable Partial Dentures incorporate both strength and rigidity from the cobal chromium framework. This allows the fabrication of less bulky RPD.
